PAs serve in many aspects of emergency medicine, including pre-hospital patient care, patient triage, fast track, trauma, and selective administrative functions. Their work is not limited to emergency departments. PAs practicing in emergency medicine also provide emergency care for patients in settings such as critical care units, pre-hospital situations, and ground or air transport. According to AAPA data, 11 percent of PAs report emergency medicine as their primary specialty.
